Social commentator and politician Isaac Fayose has questioned Nigeria’s shifting stance on electoral reforms, arguing that the country is deliberately walking away from systems it has spent hundreds of billions of naira to establish. He made the remarks on Monday at the electoral reform protest ground in Abuja, where citizens gathered to demand that votes must count.
Addressing protesters, Fayose recalled that in 2019, the Nigerian government spent billions of naira on electoral reform initiatives, followed by another massive investment ahead of the 2023 general elections, when electronic accreditation and voting reforms were publicly endorsed.
According to him, former President Goodluck Jonathan had openly supported the adoption of BVAS and electronic voting, a move that led to further government spending — with Fayose estimating that ₦359 billion was expended on election-related reforms during that period.
“2019, they spent billions on electoral reform. 2023, Jonathan said let’s go BVAS, let’s have electronic voting and they spent ₦359 billion again. Why do they want to throw away a reform they spent almost a trillion for? We all know what they’re doing.”
His comments were met with loud cheers from protesters, many of whom accused political leaders of undermining reforms designed to ensure transparency, credibility, and public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
