A dramatic protest unfolded in Abuja on Monday as Nigerians marched to the National Assembly, calling on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to immediately pass the electoral reform bill, with demonstrators chanting, “Our votes must count!”

What made the protest striking was the symbolism: several protesters carried beds on their heads, a representation, organisers said, of citizens being forced to “sleep” on their rights after elections, only to wake up to outcomes they did not choose.

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi was seen marching alongside the protesters, reinforcing his long-standing advocacy for electoral credibility, transparency, and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

Placards at the protest read:
“Akpabio, pass the bill!”
“Our votes must count!”
“Electoral reform now!”

Protesters accused political leaders of delaying reforms that would prevent vote manipulation, voter suppression, and post-election disputes, insisting that without urgent legislative action, future elections would continue to undermine the will of the people.
