Atiku Urges INEC To Reschedule 2027 Elections Over Ramadan Clash

Former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the date it has fixed for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, arguing that the current schedule clashes with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
INEC recently announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections are set to hold on February 20, 2027, followed by governorship and state assembly polls on March 6, 2027. Critics, including Atiku, say the dates fall “squarely within the Ramadan period”, expected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027, which could affect participation by Muslim voters.
In a post on his official X account, Atiku described fixing a major civic exercise during Ramadan as “poor judgment” and “a troubling lack of sensitivity” to Nigeria’s socio‑religious diversity. He added that elections are national exercises requiring “maximum participation, physical endurance, and collective focus”, requirements he says may be undermined if held during a sacred period of fasting and reflection.
Atiku also stressed that in a plural society like Nigeria, inclusive planning is not optional; it is fundamental, and choosing broadly acceptable dates demonstrates competence and respect for citizens.
The call for a review has been echoed by other public figures, including former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who also urged INEC to consider the potential impact on voter turnout.
INEC has acknowledged the concerns and said it is consulting stakeholders and may undertake adjustments where necessary, including potential legislative intervention, while affirming its commitment to credible and inclusive elections.
