SUSPENDED SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN PETITIONS IPU, ACCUSES AKPABIO OF HARASSMENT
The embattled senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has escalated her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), accusing him of orchestrating her six-month suspension and engaging in alleged sexual harassment.
Speaking at the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York, Akpoti-Uduaghan decried what she described as political victimization and an unlawful suspension. In an emotional appeal, she urged global democratic institutions to intervene, labeling the action against her as a grave injustice.
Expressing concerns for her safety, she claimed that “the powers that be” in Nigeria might attempt to detain her in New York in retaliation for her outspokenness on the international stage.
In March, the Nigerian Senate announced her suspension following recommendations from its Committee on Ethics, Rules, and Code of Conduct. The suspension bars her from entering the National Assembly, prohibits her from identifying as a senator, and strips her of her salary for the duration of the sanction.
Her petition to the IPU signals a growing international dimension to the controversy, drawing attention to gender rights, political suppression, and accountability within Nigeria’s legislative system.
