DESMOND ELLIOT IN TEARS AS MERANDA RESIGNS AS LAGOS SPEAKER

In a deeply emotional moment at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, Desmond Elliot, the representative of Surulere Constituency II, broke down in tears as lawmakers gathered to bid a heartfelt farewell to Mojisola Meranda, who resigned as Speaker of the chamber after just 49 days in office.

Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the House on January 13, ultimately succumbed to mounting pressure and stepped down from her position on Monday.

“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda announced during a special plenary session, reading from her resignation letter.

Meranda had assumed the role following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa on January 13. However, Obasa, who was abroad at the time of his removal, contested the legitimacy of the process.

Upon his return, Obasa stormed the assembly complex on Thursday and declared himself the rightful Speaker, creating a rift within the legislative body.

Normalcy was restored on Monday after Meranda’s resignation and Obasa’s subsequent renomination to the position of Speaker.

During the special plenary session, Elliot struggled to hold back his emotions while paying tribute to Meranda shortly before her resignation.
