KEMI BADENOCH FACES LEADERSHIP THREAT AS TORIES BRACE FOR HEAVY ELECTION LOSSES
Growing unrest within the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party could see Kemi Badenoch ousted as leader, as the party’s poll ratings continue to plunge ahead of next week’s crucial local elections.
The Tories are projected to lose a significant number of seats, with internal critics blaming Badenoch’s leadership style and priorities during her six months at the helm. Polls show her performance has been underwhelming, with many accusing her of focusing on the wrong issues at a critical time.
More than two dozen Conservative MPs told Bloomberg they believe Badenoch, a British-Nigerian politician, is not the right person to lead the party into the next general election, scheduled for no later than 2029.
The internal turmoil follows last year’s general election victory by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party, which ended 14 years of Conservative rule. Now, as the Tories attempt to regroup, momentum is building to replace Badenoch with Robert Jenrick, the right-wing shadow justice secretary.
Jenrick, who has made no secret of his leadership ambitions, aims to consolidate the right-wing vote and neutralize growing competition from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party. His rise signals deeper fractures within the Conservative Party and puts Badenoch’s future as leader under serious threat.
Adding to the pressure, Reform UK has consistently outperformed the Tories in recent polls, raising fears that Farage’s party could overtake them as the main political force on the right.
Critics argue that Badenoch has been too focused on cultural battles—targeting what she calls “left-wing nonsense” like overregulation and identity politics—while failing to outline detailed policy frameworks. This approach, they say, has left the party vulnerable and lacking a clear, comprehensive vision to present to voters.
With the local elections looming, Badenoch’s leadership hangs in the balance, and the coming weeks could determine the future direction of the Conservative Party.
