US Military Deploys Team to Nigeria to Boost Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

The United States military has confirmed the deployment of a small team of personnel to Nigeria as part of expanded cooperation between Washington and Abuja to tackle terrorism and related security threats.
According to General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, head of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the deployment followed discussions between U.S. and Nigerian leadership, including talks held in Rome late last year between President Donald Trump and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The move is meant to augment Nigeria’s existing efforts against Islamist militants and other armed groups operating in the country.
The U.S. team will reportedly bring specialised capabilities to support Nigerian forces in areas such as intelligence gathering, coordination and operational support, though details on its exact role and size have not been disclosed. Both the U.S. military and Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (retd.), confirmed the presence of American personnel on Nigerian soil.
This development comes after the U.S. conducted airstrikes on Islamic State-linked targets in Nigeria on December 25, 2025, and as both governments seek deeper cooperation in confronting persistent threats posed by groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
While the deployment highlights growing security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, it is expected to spark further discussion at home about the role of foreign military teams in supporting Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
