OPPOSITION HEAVYWEIGHTS MEET IN ABUJA TO FORM COALITION AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
Key figures from Nigeria’s major opposition parties convened at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2, for a strategic meeting aimed at forging a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The meeting followed the formal adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the official platform for the emerging opposition coalition.
Among the high-profile attendees were the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party flagbearer, Peter Obi; former governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); as well as former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola.
Mark and Aregbesola, who recently took up roles as interim national chairman and national secretary of the ADC respectively, represent a significant political shift, having previously belonged to the PDP and APC.
Also present were a host of influential figures including former federal lawmaker Dino Melaye, ex-Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, publisher and media personality Dele Momodu, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Labour Party Senator Ireti Kingibe, former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, a former Chief of Air Staff.
The event attracted politicians from across the opposition spectrum, including members of the PDP, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party—signalling a growing resolve to consolidate political strength ahead of the 2027 polls.
Analysts view the formation of this broad-based coalition as a bold step towards reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape, potentially altering the balance of power in the upcoming elections.
