TWO TRUCK DRIVERS KILLED IN IMO AS GUNMEN STRIKE AT OGI JUNCTION

Tragedy struck over the weekend at Ogi Junction in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, where two truck drivers were killed by unknown gunmen in a brutal daylight attack.

According to officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the assailants ambushed the vehicle, which was fully loaded with gari, before setting both the truck and the corpses ablaze.

Chairman of the NURTW in Okigwe, Dahiru Musa, confirmed the attack, revealing that security agencies, including police officers and soldiers, have since visited the scene. “The soldiers and the DPO of Okigwe were there. The police helped us evacuate the bodies, and by Monday, we performed funeral prayers and buried them,” Musa told reporters.

Further details emerged from Jos, where the spokesperson of NURTW’s Heavy Truck Unit at Laranto Motor Park, Mahmud Jafaru, identified the deceased drivers as Haruna Muhammad and Adamu Ibrahim. He disclosed that the victims had loaded gari in Ayangade and were en route to Port Harcourt when they were intercepted and killed.

“This is becoming unbearable. Drivers from the North are increasingly targeted and killed as if their lives don’t matter. Each trip to Port Harcourt feels like a gamble with death, and still, the government appears unmoved,” Jafaru lamented.

He called on authorities at all levels to urgently address the growing insecurity facing truck drivers across the southern transport corridors, warning that the industry has already suffered massive losses in human lives and property worth millions of naira.

As of press time, the Imo State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the attack.
