LAGOS POLICE DISPELS RUMOURS OVER VIRAL VIDEO OF 89 YOUNG MEN IN IBEJU-LEKKI
The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed rumours circulating on social media regarding a viral video showing 89 young men arriving and assembling in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the individuals were legitimate labourers recruited from Katsina State to work at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki.
“Upon receipt of the information on May 14, 2025, operatives of the Command swiftly moved to the scene to investigate,” the statement read. “Preliminary findings confirmed that the 89 men had been hired to work as labourers at the refinery.”
According to the police, both the contractor responsible for their recruitment and the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the refinery affirmed the legitimacy of the arrangement. The contractor reportedly told investigators he personally sourced the labourers for employment and accommodation within the refinery’s premises.
The Command noted that comprehensive checks were carried out on the group. “Each individual was properly identified, presented a valid National Identification Number (NIN), and was subjected to a thorough search. No incriminating items were found,” Hundeyin added.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged residents to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information. “The Command remains dedicated to maintaining public safety and will continue to respond swiftly to security concerns across the state,” he assured.
The police reiterated their call for responsible information sharing, warning against the dangers of alarmist narratives that could incite fear or unrest.
