Maryam Bukar Hassan Makes History As First Nigerian To Carry Olympic Flag At Milano Cortina 2026

Nigerian poet and United Nations Global Advocate for Peace, Maryam Bukar Hassan, has made history as the first Nigerian to carry the Olympic flag at the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy.
The prestigious moment took place on February 6, 2026, at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, where a distinguished group of international figures, chosen for their global influence, cultural impact, and commitment to peace, were selected as “Flag Bearers of Peace” by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Among them were Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, Brazilian gymnastics star Rebeca Andrade, and Tongan humanitarian Pita Taufatofua.
Unlike athletes who march with their national flags, the Olympic flag is traditionally carried by individuals chosen to embody the core values of the Olympic Movement, unity, peace, and international friendship. Maryam’s selection reflects her long-standing advocacy work that promotes peacebuilding, social inclusion, and gender equality on the global stage.
Taking to social media after the ceremony, Maryam described the experience as a powerful reminder that peace “is not an event, but a practice”, calling on people worldwide to embrace dignity, human connection, and collaboration beyond the Olympic spotlight.
Known in the arts world as Alhanislam, Maryam has used poetry and spoken word to advocate for change and uplift marginalized voices. In 2025, she was appointed the United Nations Global Advocate for Peace, a role that recognizes her contributions to peace and youth empowerment.
