POULTRY FARMERS RAISE ALARM OVER DECLINING EGG SALES AMID ECONOMIC HARDSHIP
The Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) has expressed deep concern over the sharp decline in egg sales across the country, attributing the downturn to worsening economic conditions and reduced consumer purchasing power.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse, Chairman of PFAN Jigawa Chapter, Mr. Hussaini Gumel, highlighted the multiple challenges crippling poultry businesses in the state.
“Since the removal of fuel subsidy, our industry has been hit hard. Many Nigerians can no longer afford eggs, and our sales have plummeted,” Gumel stated.
He noted that rising inflation, particularly in the cost of poultry feed and essential production inputs, has made it increasingly difficult for farmers to remain afloat.
“It’s disheartening that chicken feed is significantly cheaper in Jos, Plateau State, than it is in Jigawa. This cost disparity has made profitability nearly impossible for local farmers,” he lamented.
Beyond rising production costs, Gumel pointed to inadequate infrastructure, especially the lack of refrigeration and cooling systems, as a major obstacle in preserving eggs and poultry products in the state’s harsh weather conditions.
He warned that the poultry sector in Jigawa is on the verge of collapse, unless urgent government intervention is provided to support farmers and stabilize the market.
“There’s no market for our products, and the lack of money in circulation is alarming. We are appealing for immediate support to prevent massive losses and the collapse of our businesses,” he added.
The association called on the state and federal governments to prioritize the agricultural sector and implement policies that can cushion the impact of the current economic realities on local producers.
