SHOE THROWN AT KENYA’S PRESIDENT RUTO DURING COST OF LIVING RALLY 

Tensions flared in Kenya on Sunday, May 4, when President William Ruto was struck with a thrown shoe during a speech on the rising cost of living—a subject that has sparked growing discontent nationwide.

The incident occurred in Migori County, western Kenya. Viral footage shows President Ruto deftly blocking the incoming shoe with his arm, unfazed, as he continued addressing the crowd:
“We have said we are reducing the price of fertiliser, true or false?”

The shoe stirred a small cloud of dust but caused no injury.

Public frustration in Kenya has surged due to tax hikes and inflation. Ruto has since shelved some of his controversial tax proposals and brought opposition figures into government in a bid to calm tensions—but dissatisfaction lingers.

Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the shoe-throwing incident, as reported by The Star newspaper.

The moment drew global comparisons to the iconic 2008 protest when an Iraqi journalist threw a shoe at then U.S. President George W. Bush.
