Civil Rights Icon Rev. Jesse Jackson Dies at 84

The world has lost a towering figure in the fight for justice and equality with the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, the celebrated civil rights leader and former U.S. presidential candidate, at the age of 84. Jackson died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by family, his loved ones said in a statement.
Born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson rose from segregation and discrimination to become a defining voice in the American civil rights movement. A close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he was present during many pivotal moments in the struggle for racial justice, including standing with King in Memphis shortly before his assassination.
Jackson twice sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination — in 1984 and 1988 — breaking barriers as one of the first Black candidates to gain significant national support in U.S. politics. His campaigns helped reshape the political landscape and expand representation for African Americans and marginalized communities.
Jackson’s influence extended beyond the United States as he became a global symbol of perseverance, courage, and principled activism. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, their children and grandchildren, and a worldwide community determined to carry forward his vision of dignity and equality for all.
