A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, has left ten people dead, including the suspected shooter, and at least 27 others injured, police confirmed on Tuesday, February 10.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the incident unfolded in the early afternoon when an active shooter opened fire inside the school and at a nearby residence. Six victims were found dead inside the school, one more succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital, and two additional bodies were located at a residence believed to be linked to the attack. The gunman was also found dead from an apparent self‑inflicted wound.
Authorities say more than 25 others sustained injuries, with two of those seriously or critically wounded airlifted to hospital and the remainder treated for non‑life‑threatening wounds. All students and staff were evacuated safely from the school, which serves grades 7 to 12 in the tight‑knit community of roughly 2,400 residents.
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit has confirmed there are no outstanding suspected threats, though the motive for the shootings remains unclear and investigators continue their work. British Columbia officials characterized the attack as an unimaginable tragedy, with support services mobilized for affected families and residents.
National and provincial leaders, including British Columbia Premier David Eby and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, expressed deep sorrow and pledged governmental assistance. Schools in Tumbler Ridge will remain closed for the week as counseling and reunification support is provided.
The shootings mark one of the deadliest mass attacks in Canadian history, echoing earlier tragedies and reigniting discussions around community safety and gun violence prevention.
