In response to a deadly attack on communities in Kwara State, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Woro village, Kaiama Local Government Area on Saturday to meet with survivors and assess the situation on the ground. The visit, undertaken on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscores the federal government’s efforts to support victims and restore security in the region following widespread violence.

The tragic incident occurred on February 3, 2026, when gunmen stormed the rural settlements of Woro and neighbouring Nuku. According to the Kwara State Police Command, at least 75 residents were confirmed killed in the assault, with homes and shops burned and many victims still reported missing amid ongoing investigations.

While official figures cite 75 confirmed fatalities, humanitarian organizations and local reports suggest the death toll may be much higher, possibly exceeding 160 as bodies continue to be recovered and more information emerges.

During his visit, Vice President Shettima conveyed the federal leadership’s condolences to grieving families and reiterated the government’s commitment to finding and prosecuting those responsible for the attack. His presence aims to coordinate relief efforts with state authorities, ensure affected communities receive urgent assistance, and reinforce security measures designed to prevent similar violence in the future.

President Tinubu has ordered the deployment of an army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield to the region, as part of a broader strategy to counter militant and violent extremist groups whose activities have expanded into Nigeria’s central belt.

The tragic events in Kwara have drawn national and international condemnation, with authorities and global partners urging swift action to protect civilians and uphold peace across Nigeria’s diverse communities.
