Renowned Nigerian music producer and songwriter Cobhams Asuquo has sparked conversations online following his candid opinion on the Grammy Awards and Nigeria’s growing involvement in the global music space.

According to Cobhams, he believes the Grammy Awards are using Nigerians to boost the GDP of Los Angeles, describing the situation as a “carrot dangling in front of us” that keeps slipping away. He argued that while Nigerian artists and fans continue to invest energy, attention, and resources into the award platform, the real economic benefits remain within the United States.

The award-winning producer stressed the need for Nigeria to build strong entertainment platforms of its own rather than overly depending on foreign validation. Drawing a comparison, he pointed out that the Super Bowl remains an American event that is largely celebrated and performed by Americans themselves.

Cobhams’ statement has since generated mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that Africa needs globally respected homegrown award platforms, while others defended international recognition as a tool for global exposure.
