Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns to Nigeria After UK Prison Term

Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after completing the custodial portion of her prison sentence in the United Kingdom. She arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, where she was received by family members and close associates marking her first return since the legal proceedings began in mid-2022.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was convicted in May 2023 at London’s Old Bailey for conspiring to facilitate the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his kidney intended for their daughter, who suffers from a chronic medical condition. She was sentenced to four years and six months in prison but became eligible for release after serving half her sentence, aided by good conduct and broader measures to ease prison overcrowding.
Her return has sparked celebrations in her hometown of Mpu in Enugu State, even as her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, remains incarcerated in the UK. The former lawmaker was handed a nine-year and eight-month sentence far longer than his wife’s after the court identified him as the principal architect of the conspiracy.
Diplomatic efforts by the Nigerian government late last year to secure his transfer to serve the remainder of his sentence in Nigeria were reportedly rejected by the UK Home Office, which expressed concerns over enforcement of the sentence if moved to Nigerian jurisdiction.
Also serving time is Dr. Obinna Obeta, described as the medical “middleman” in the plot, who continues a 10-year prison term in the UK. Mrs. Ekweremadu and Obeta’s daughter, Sonia cleared of all criminal charges remains in the UK for ongoing medical treatment.
