A major scandal has rocked South African media and raised serious questions about foreign mercenary recruitment after Nonkululeko Mantula, a well-known presenter on state radio station SAfm, appeared in court accused of recruiting South African citizens to fight for the Russian military in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Mantula, 39, was arrested along with four other suspects after a tip-off triggered investigations by the national police and the anti-state Crimes-Against-the-State unit.  Three of the alleged recruits were intercepted at the airport while attempting to board flights to Russia via the United Arab Emirates, and at least one other person is believed to have already traveled to Russia before the arrests.

They are charged under the country’s Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act, which criminalises facilitating foreign military enlistment without government approval.  During their first court appearance at Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court, all five were remanded in custody, with their bail hearing scheduled for early December.

Authorities have seized electronic devices and other materials for forensic analysis and are coordinating with international intelligence agencies to dismantle what officials suspect may be a broader recruitment network operating across borders.

The case has reignited warnings by the South African government about rising recruitment efforts targeting vulnerable citizens, often disguised as job offers, training opportunities or glamorous prospects abroad.

As this story develops, it raises disturbing questions about exploitation, disinformation, and the duty of public figures to use their platforms responsibly. The world is watching, and justice must follow.
