A devastating gas explosion struck the Bioku‑Alaadun area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, leaving three confirmed dead, including the owner of a retail gas shop. The tragedy occurred while a tanker was discharging liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) into the shop’s storage facility.

Witnesses described a massive blast that sent thick smoke into the sky and caused widespread panic, prompting nearby residents and passers-by to flee as the fire raged. The blast also destroyed nearby property, with portions of buildings and residences damaged or destroyed. Fire service teams were immediately deployed, and normalcy has reportedly been restored after the evacuation of affected residents.

While it is confirmed that the tanker was carrying 15 tonnes of LPG, the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Authorities have emphasized the urgent need for stricter safety regulations in the handling and transfer of flammable gases, especially in densely populated urban areas. Accidents involving gas tankers have happened before, but when they occur in residential communities, the consequences can be particularly catastrophic.

The incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of proper oversight, community awareness, and adherence to safety protocols to prevent such disasters in the future. Families of the victims are expected to receive support, and efforts to rebuild damaged properties are likely to begin soon.
