NIGERIA’S FAVOUR OFILI DUMPS COUNTRY FOR TURKEY OVER OLYMPIC SNUB

Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili has officially dumped Nigeria for Turkey, citing repeated administrative negligence as the reason behind her nationality switch — a move that has sent shockwaves through the country’s athletics community.
Ofili, one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects in track and field, was controversially denied a chance to compete in the women’s 100m at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, despite meeting the qualification standard. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) failed to enter her name — a devastating déjà vu of the 2021 Tokyo Games, where she and 12 other Nigerian athletes were barred from competing due to the federation’s failure to meet anti-doping testing requirements.
Frustrated by what she described as a “consistent pattern of negligence,” Ofili formally began her nationality switch to Turkey on May 31, 2025, and notified the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of her decision.
“This is not about money,” she reportedly stated, “it’s about respect, structure, and the freedom to chase my dreams without unnecessary setbacks.”
Ofili’s departure comes just weeks after the controversial re-election of the same AFN leadership responsible for past administrative blunders. For many observers, her exit underscores a deeper crisis in Nigerian athletics — one where talent is routinely undermined by bureaucratic failings.
The 21-year-old boasts impressive personal bests of 10.93 seconds in the 100m and 21.96 seconds in the 200m. She recently finished sixth in the women’s 200m final at the Paris Games — a feat that could have flown Nigeria’s flag higher, had things been different.
