LIGHTNING STRIKE KILLS 32 COWS IN OGUN COMMUNITY DURING HEAVY RAINFALL
No fewer than 32 cows were reportedly killed by a lightning strike during a heavy downpour in the Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
The tragic incident, which occurred around 12 noon, was confirmed by the Baale of Osara, Chief Wasiu Afolabi, who told reporters on Sunday that Fulani herders tending the cows raised the alarm around 2 p.m. when the lightning struck.
“I was at home when the Fulani herders came to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows,” Afolabi said. “I followed them to their grazing spot and saw the carcasses. We have since informed the Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo.”
According to him, a community meeting was scheduled with the Fulani herders to discuss the next steps and maintain peace in the area.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also confirmed the incident via a WhatsApp message. He stated that the Divisional Police Officer of the Aregbe Division led a team to the scene after receiving the report around 1:30 p.m.
“Thirty-two cows were confirmed dead after a thunderstorm with lightning occurred during the heavy rainfall,” Ogunlowo said.
The development has left the local community in shock, with residents expressing concern over the unusual occurrence. Authorities have urged calm while investigations and community dialogues continue.
