POLICE CLARIFY VIRAL SCHOOLGIRL SMOKING VIDEO: “IT’S NOT FROM NIGERIA”
The Nigeria Police Force has responded to a disturbing video making rounds on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, showing a school-aged girl smoking what appears to be cannabis while surrounded by cheering classmates. The footage, widely circulated with captions alleging it was filmed in a Nigerian school, has sparked concern and outrage among parents and the general public.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, debunked the claim, revealing that investigations strongly suggest the video originated from Zimbabwe — not Nigeria.
“Our preliminary investigation into its origin strongly suggests that the video did not originate in Nigeria,” Adejobi said. “Multiple indicators point towards Zimbabwe as the source.”
According to the police, linguistic analysis revealed that the individuals in the video were speaking a mixture of English and Shona — a language widely spoken in Zimbabwe and some parts of southern Africa. “Critically, no Nigerian languages or discernible Nigerian accents are present in the audio,” Adejobi emphasized.
Another significant clue came from the Instagram account that initially posted the video. The police identified the handle as @rusape_celebs_tv, which is based in Rusape, a town in Zimbabwe. The original caption accompanying the post was also written in Shona.
The Nigeria Police urged citizens to refrain from spreading unverified information, warning that such actions can cause unnecessary panic and potentially damage reputations.
“We urge the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information,” Adejobi stated. “Disseminating misleading content can have serious consequences for individuals, institutions, and the broader society.”
The Force reiterated the importance of digital responsibility, especially when engaging with sensitive or controversial material online.
