EFCC BREAKS SILENCE ON VERYDARKMAN’S ARREST
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially addressed the arrest of controversial social media personality and activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), stating that his detention is linked to serious allegations of financial misconduct.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, the anti-graft agency confirmed that VDM was taken into custody following multiple petitions accusing him of financial malfeasance. According to the EFCC, the allegations are considered “grave” and warranted immediate investigation.
The agency emphasized that VDM had been previously invited on several occasions but failed to honor the summons, prompting his eventual arrest. “He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him through his known addresses and medium of communication,” the statement read.
Responding to widespread speculation that the arrest was politically motivated or linked to VDM’s frequent criticisms of the EFCC, the Commission firmly denied the claims. “While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks,” it stated, noting that any concerns around his statements would be addressed by the appropriate law enforcement channels.
EFCC also confirmed that a remand order was duly obtained, and that Otse has been granted administrative bail pending fulfillment of the conditions. The Commission urged the public to refrain from making assumptions about its motives and allow due process to take its course.
“As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed,” the statement concluded.
