NYSC MEMBER FACING BACKLASH FROM GOVERNMENT, GAINS SUPPORT FROM VERYDARKMAN
A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member has sparked controversy after publicly criticizing the Nigerian government over the rising cost of living. The corps member, currently serving in Lagos, went viral after sharing a video in which she expressed frustration over President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the country’s economic struggles.
Shortly after posting the video, she allegedly received a call from an NYSC official instructing her to take it down or face consequences. The development has since drawn widespread reactions, with social media activist Martis Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), stepping in to defend her.
“She Said Nothing But the Truth”—VDM Stands His Ground
VDM condemned the threats against the corps member, asserting that she had done nothing wrong by speaking her mind. He emphasized the importance of free speech and criticized any attempts to silence critical voices.
Known for his outspoken stance on government policies, VDM has previously questioned the administration’s claims on key economic issues. He challenged the federal government’s assertion that a 50kg bag of rice costs ₦40,000, insisting that market prices exceed ₦70,000. He also cast doubt on reports that the NYSC allowance had been raised to ₦77,000, pointing out that corps members still receive ₦33,000.
Reassuring the corps member, VDM promised to support her if she faced job discrimination due to her outspoken views.
“I don’t even know why you’re doing NYSC. At the end of the day, no job. Instead of wasting time, learn a skill or get real work experience. Everything she said was true! We’ve all become cowards. Just look at the cost of things—they’ve ruined this country. If they blacklist you and private companies refuse to hire you, don’t worry, we’ll find you a job,” he stated.
Public Outrage Grows
The situation has fueled online debates about economic hardship and freedom of speech in Nigeria. Many social media users expressed their frustration, agreeing with the corps member’s concerns.
@olabisof_lag23: “Omo, them wan suffocate us for this country.”
@jonnysignature: “Basic needs are now luxury. It’s ridiculous.”
@oneadedolapo: “In Nigeria, speaking the truth comes with consequences. It’s sad!”
