PETER OBI MOCKS TINUBU’S ECONOMIC POLICIES, SAYS HE HAS TRULY CONTINUED BUHARI’S LEGACY
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has taken a jab at President Bola Tinubu, sarcastically commending him for staying true to his promise of continuing former President Muhammadu Buhari’s legacy.
Speaking during a visit to Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi on Thursday, March 13, Obi criticized the administration’s economic policies, stressing the need for Nigeria to move beyond ethnic and religious politics and focus on leadership rooted in competence and capacity.
“Tinubu promised to continue where Buhari stopped. If you look at it, Buhari left the dollar at about N400; today, it is about N1,500. Rice was about N40,000; now, it’s over N100,000. Fuel was around N300; now, it’s over N1,000. I can go on—everything has doubled and tripled. So, he has indeed done exactly as he promised,” Obi remarked.
Comparing Nigeria’s economic trajectory to that of Indonesia, Obi highlighted how their leadership transformed the nation over the past decade.
“In Indonesia, a president was sworn in around the same time as one in Nigeria. Ten years later, Indonesia grew its GDP from $800 billion to $1.3 trillion and increased per capita income from $3,000 to $5,000. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s GDP has fallen from $500 billion to $200 billion, and per capita income has dropped from $3,500 to below $2,000—that is the difference,” he explained.
He stressed the urgent need to revive industries, invest in education and healthcare, and shift Nigeria towards a productive and sustainable economy.
On his meeting with Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi described it as part of ongoing discussions to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
“We have just started discussions. You can’t consummate a marriage in one day. But the key takeaway is that our focus is on issues that affect ordinary Nigerians.
We want a Nigeria where a child of nobody can become somebody. We will dismantle the elite conspiracy that thrives on tribalism and religion to divide the people. We have voted based on tribe and religion before; now, we must vote based on competence and capacity,” Obi stated.
