PANIC AS TRUMP ORDERS TRANSGENDER INMATES BE TRANSFERRED TO MALE PRISON CELLS
Donald Trump has ordered transgender prisoners to be transferred to facilities matching their sex at birth.
On his first day back in office, United States President Donald Trump issued an executive order mandating federal prisons to transfer transgender women to men’s facilities and halt gender transition-related medical treatments for inmates.
This directive, part of a broader order aimed at restricting government recognition of gender to one’s sex at birth, also extends to immigration detainees. It marks a significant escalation of Trump’s previous policies, which had already set restrictions on housing and healthcare for transgender prisoners during his earlier term.
The Women’s Liberation Front, an advocacy group that defines women based on biological sex and supports single-sex prisons, celebrated the order as “a major victory.” The group is currently challenging a California law that permits prisoners to request housing based on their gender identity, arguing it violates the constitutional rights of cisgender female inmates, particularly under the Eighth Amendment, which protects against cruel and unusual punishment.
Trump’s order echoed these concerns, stating that “efforts to eradicate the biological reality of sex fundamentally attack women by depriving them of their dignity, safety, and well-being.”
However, the order has drawn sharp criticism from advocates for transgender rights. Shannon Minter, legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, condemned the policy, warning of its potential dangers:
“There will be rapes and physical assaults because of this policy,” Minter stated. “It’s also terrible for prison officials, who currently have the discretion to make decisions that prioritize safety and security within facilities.”
Legal experts predict the order may face significant challenges in court. Federal rulings have established that prison systems must protect vulnerable inmates and provide medical care, including hormone therapies, to those diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
