Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, has concluded a strategic visit to Burundi where he explored investment opportunities and held high-level discussions with President Évariste Ndayishimiye, strengthening economic ties between the industrial giant and the East African nation.
The visit, described by Dangote as both diplomatic and economic in scope, included a meeting at the presidential palace in Bujumbura, where he was accompanied by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Speaking after the discussions, Dangote emphasised his commitment to investing heavily across Africa, noting that Burundi is an important part of the continent’s economic landscape. “Our focus really is investing heavily in the African continent, not anywhere else, and so Burundi is part and parcel of that African region,” he said.
Plans discussed during the visit include constituting two technical teams, one from the Dangote Group and the other from the Burundian government, to identify priority sectors and develop viable investment projects.
Dangote pointed to several sectors with strong potential, including solid minerals, power generation, agriculture, cement production, and infrastructure development, emphasising that the goal is to forge partnerships that drive shared prosperity.
Officials said talks also focused on strategic cooperation in infrastructure, logistics, industrialisation, and energy, areas that are key to Burundi’s long-term development plans.
Observers view the engagement as significant for both economies: it positions Burundi as a credible destination for major African investors while aligning with Dangote’s broader strategy of expanding the Group’s footprint across the continent.
