Parents Win £858,000 After Daughter Dies in Turkey Weight-Loss Surgery

The parents of a Nigerian-born UK woman who died after weight-loss surgery in Turkey have been awarded £858,000 in compensation by the High Court.

Toyin and Oyebanji Ashamu brought the claim following the death of their 26-year-old daughter, Khelisyah Ashamu, a mother of one and IT worker from Romford, who died just eight days after undergoing a low-cost gastric bypass procedure in Izmir in February 2019.

Khelisyah had booked the surgery through Get Slim in Turkey, a British expat-run medical tourism company, paying £3,300 for the operation and accommodation. After becoming seriously ill, she underwent a second exploratory surgery, suffered a cardiac arrest and died on 9 February 2019.

A coroner later ruled that her death was caused by gastrointestinal ischaemia — a loss of blood flow to the intestines — arising from surgical complications.

Her parents sued Tracey Ozdemir, who trades as Get Slim in Turkey, arguing the company was responsible as the organiser of a package travel contract. Although liability was denied, the court ruled in their favour.

Mrs Justice Obi found there had been inadequate post-operative monitoring and airway care and held the company legally responsible for both the surgery and aftercare. In awarding £858,000 to Khelisyah’s parents, the judge expressed sympathy for their loss, saying the ruling could not undo their grief but might offer some comfort.
