A fresh controversy has erupted in Nigeria’s National Assembly over the recently passed Electoral Reform Bill (2026 Electoral Act Amendment), with leading opposition senators warning that the version presented as passed does not reflect what the Senate actually approved. The dispute centers on the electronic transmission of election results, a reform many lawmakers — and Nigerians — view as critical to credible elections.
At a press briefing in Abuja, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, alongside Senator Aminu Tambuwal, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and other opposition lawmakers, insisted that the document announced by the Senate leadership deviated from the version previously debated and approved by the chamber. According to them, the legislature had unanimously agreed that electronic transmission of results — including real-time uploads from polling units — must be retained and clearly reflected in the final bill before it is sent to the President for assent.
The senators described electronic transmission as a core element of the amendments, reflecting widespread demands for improved transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process. They argued that any version of the bill that diminishes this provision undermines the spirit of reform that informed the months-long legislative exercise.
