PROTEST ROCKS LAGOS ASSEMBLY OVER MOVE TO “UNSEAT” MERANDA
In the early hours of Monday, February 17, operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly, sealing off the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk of the house.

By 10 a.m., armed security personnel had taken control of the Alausa, Ikeja premises, frisking passersby. However, Meranda later arrived with her convoy at about 11:15 a.m.
This development follows the legal battle initiated by Mudashiru Obasa, the embattled former Speaker of the House, who is challenging his removal. Obasa has filed a motion at the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, seeking an accelerated hearing of his case.

Obasa was removed in absentia on January 13, 2025, while he was in America. His removal—approved by 32 out of 40 Assembly members—has been described by President Bola Tinubu as a “coup.”
The situation has sparked controversy within the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, with members divided over his removal. In his suit, Obasa is challenging the legality of his ousting from office.
