The National Assembly has thrown its weight behind the proposed ₦1.5 trillion allocation to the Nigerian Army in the 2026 federal budget, citing pressing national security challenges across the country.

Lawmakers said the increased funding is necessary to strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army, particularly in the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other emerging security threats affecting several regions of Nigeria.

According to members of the legislature, the allocation will cover personnel welfare, procurement of modern military equipment, intelligence gathering, training, and improved logistics, all aimed at enhancing troop efficiency and morale.

The endorsement followed budget defence sessions where military authorities reportedly outlined the Army’s funding needs and operational demands. Legislators emphasized that adequate funding of the armed forces remains critical to safeguarding lives, property, and national stability.

As deliberations on the 2026 budget continue, the proposed ₦1.5 trillion allocation to the Nigerian Army stands as one of the largest security-related expenditures, reflecting the federal government’s focus on addressing Nigeria’s persistent security concerns.
