Senate Appoints 12-Member Committee on Electoral Amendment Act Amid Public Uproar

The Nigerian Senate has appointed a 12-member committee to work with the House of Representatives on the Electoral Amendment Act, a move that comes amid growing public outrage and nationwide protests over proposed changes to the electoral process.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during an emergency plenary session, as pressure continues to mount on the National Assembly to protect electoral reforms particularly provisions relating to electronic transmission of results.
According to Akpabio, the committee is expected to harmonise positions between both chambers of the National Assembly and address contentious sections of the amendment bill that have triggered backlash from civil society groups, activists, and concerned citizens.
Among the senators named as members of the committee are Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Tahir Monguno, alongside other lawmakers drawn from key legislative committees.
