Nigeria’s First Lady and Senator, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to show greater respect and unity in their engagement with the country’s leaders, urging citizens to move away from hostility and divisive narratives.

In a statement shared via her official platform, Tinubu said many Nigerian leaders are highly respected and honoured abroad, but are often criticised and devalued at home due to what she described as hatred and narratives planted by political actors. She noted that such narratives have contributed to hardened attitudes and growing intolerance within society.

According to her, some Nigerians resort to bullying, verbal attacks, and public ridicule of leaders, especially on social media, often magnifying their mistakes. She warned that this trend undermines national cohesion and weakens collective efforts toward progress.

Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria was built on the principles of love, unity, and shared responsibility, stressing that national development requires cooperation rather than constant antagonism. She urged citizens to work hand in hand with leaders to achieve shared success and strengthen the nation.

The statement has since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the balance between holding leaders accountable and maintaining respect in public discourse.
