Award-winning Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage recently shared an emotional moment with fans after interviewing her mother about the circumstances surrounding her birth, a conversation that shed light on the dangers of childbirth in Nigeria during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

According to Tiwa’s mother, 1980 was a difficult and frightening year for pregnant women, as many mothers lost their lives during childbirth. She recalled that several of her friends who were pregnant at the time did not survive delivery, making the period one filled with fear and uncertainty.

She revealed that she had initially wanted to travel abroad to give birth, hoping for safer medical care. However, she said people around her discouraged the idea, insisting that Nigeria was better and that there was no need to leave the country to deliver her baby.

Narrating her personal ordeal, Tiwa Savage’s mother disclosed that she was in labour for four days before finally giving birth an experience that could have ended tragically, given the realities of maternal healthcare at the time.
