Brother Narrates Harrowing Final Moments of Ifunanya Nwangene After Snake Bite

The brother of late singer Ifunanya “Nanyah” Nwangene has shared a heartbreaking account of how she died following a snake bite at her Abuja home in a tragedy that has ignited fresh conversation on emergency healthcare response in Nigeria.
According to her brother, Emy Kaybaba, Nanyah woke up in pain on the morning of January 31 after being bitten by a snake inside her residence. She immediately tied a tourniquet to slow the spread of venom, then booked a rider and made her way to the hospital all while staying on the phone with him.
Kaybaba said the first hospital in Lugbe told her they didn’t have anti-venom available, prompting her to go to another facility at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja. But at that hospital, he claims doctors removed her tourniquet against her protests and began administering only IV fluids, despite her repeated complaints that the venom was spreading.
He recounted that he noticed her speech become unclear during their call, and soon after she was disconnected from him, her condition deteriorated rapidly and she passed away within minutes. Kaybaba has rejected claims that she was incoherent upon arrival, insisting she was speaking clearly to him on the phone and even recorded a video of hospital staff administering drip therapy before her condition worsened.
In his raw and emotional write-up, he lamented the loss of his sister and accused the system of failing her at a critical moment. His testimony has sparked widespread reactions online, with many questioning emergency care preparedness especially the availability of life-saving anti-venom in hospitals even in Nigeria’s capital.
Nanyah, a rising singer known for her soulful voice and musical versatility, has been remembered by friends, neighbours, and fans as a beautiful and talented soul whose life was cut far too short.
