Flights Cancelled, Roads Flooded As Rare Storm Soaks UAE

A rare and powerful rainstorm hammered the United Arab Emirates on Friday, bringing flash flooding, widespread travel chaos, and major disruption across the nation. Heavy thunderstorms soaked major cities including Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, prompting authorities to issue safety warnings and advise residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
The severe weather caused significant flight disruptions at key UAE aviation hubs. Emirates airline cancelled at least 13 flights from Dubai International Airport, while flydubai also reported delays and cancellations as crews battled dangerous wind and rain conditions. Passengers were urged to check flight statuses and allow extra travel time.
Across the country, roads quickly became waterlogged as torrential rain overwhelmed infrastructure. Streets in Dubai and Sharjah were submerged, slowing commuters and forcing some bus services to be suspended. Motorists were warned to drive with caution or avoid travel due to reduced visibility and flood hazards.
Local authorities, including Dubai Police and Sharjah Civil Defence, deployed emergency response and traffic management teams to assist with water removal and keep key routes open. Schools and workplaces in some areas were advised to adopt remote operations to ensure public safety during the storm.
While rain isn’t unheard of during the UAE’s cooler months, such heavy downpours are rare and increasingly impactful in a region known for its arid climate. Episodes like this can quickly overwhelm drainage systems and turn normally dry streets into rivers, highlighting the challenges extreme weather can bring even in the driest corners of the world.
As the storm begins to ease, travellers are advised to stay updated on flight statuses, follow official weather advisories, and prioritise safety above all else.
