In a candid social media statement, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has sounded the alarm on what she describes as a growing tide of fake and misleading stories circulating across Nigeria, especially on social media. She expressed serious concern over “too many fake stories” being deliberately invented or manipulated, many of which focus on insecurity and are intended to tarnish the image of the government.

The First Lady argued that certain individuals and groups, with malicious intent, twist events, edit videos, or invent incidents just to create fear, confusion, and unrest among Nigerians. According to her, this tactic aims to make citizens lose trust in the government, painting the country as if it is engulfed in constant chaos.

She appealed to everyone to be more responsible: before forwarding any news, voice note, or video, no matter how shocking or emotionally charged, take a moment to verify its authenticity. Her advice: confirm from credible sources, follow official updates, and avoid sharing content that hasn’t been confirmed.

Highlighting the dangerous impact of misinformation, the First Lady said fake news “harms all of us,” destabilizing communities, causing unnecessary panic, and eroding the peace and unity Nigerians have been striving to build. She called on citizens to rise above those who want to mislead the public, to share only what is true and to protect the country’s image by refusing to spread lies.

Her statement comes amid a climate where rumors of insecurity, abductions, and violence spread quickly, sometimes before facts are known, often causing widespread fears and anxiety. The First Lady’s message is a timely call for media literacy, caution, and collective responsibility.

As Nigeria grapples with security challenges, economic hardship, and social tension, Oluremi Tinubu’s reminder underscores the power of information, and the heavy cost of misinformation. It is a rallying cry for all Nigerians: only verified truth can foster unity, trust, and stability.
