TikTok has taken a bold step in Nigeria, banning 49,512 live sessions in what it frames as a concerted effort to foster safer online spaces. This move comes amid signs of heightened scrutiny on live-streaming, where real-time conversations can be harder to moderate and more prone to abuse.

Over the same period, the company removed more than 3.6 million videos from its Nigerian platform for violating TikTok’s community rules. These aren’t just isolated takedowns, the scale suggests a sweeping enforcement of content standards. As part of the crackdown, TikTok also shut down over 42,000 live rooms and interrupted more than 48,000 live streams, indicating a strong focus on preventing harmful behavior in live broadcasts.

But TikTok’s strategy isn’t purely punitive. The company is also expanding its in-app support features, giving Nigerian users access to local helplines for issues such as self-harm, harassment, and hate speech.
