ONDO-BORN SURGEON, DR. OLUYINKA OLU TOYE, PERFORMS GROUND-BREAKING IN-WOMB SURGERY IN THE USA
A remarkable medical feat by Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a U.S.-based Nigerian pediatric surgeon, has placed Ondo State on the global map for excellence in healthcare innovation.
Dr. Olutoye, who hails from Idoani in Ondo State, performed a highly complex and historic surgery that involved removing a foetus from the womb at 23 weeks gestation, successfully excising a life-threatening tumor, and returning the baby to the womb — alive and thriving.
The unborn child, diagnosed with sacrococcygeal teratoma, a rare and dangerous tumor, was given a fighting chance after the intricate operation. After the successful removal of the tumor, the foetus was carefully placed back into the mother’s womb and continued to develop for another 13 weeks.
At 36 weeks, the baby — named Lynlee Hope — was delivered naturally and without complications, an extraordinary outcome that earned her the nickname “the baby born twice.”
