R. KELLY ALLEGEDLY OVERDOSES IN PRISON, LAWYERS ACCUSE FEDERAL STAFF OF PLOTTING TO KILL HIM
R&B star R. Kelly was allegedly rushed to a hospital last week after overdosing behind bars—a development his legal team says was no accident.
In court documents obtained by The New York Post, Kelly’s attorney, Beau B. Brindley, accused officials at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, of deliberately administering excessive medication to the incarcerated singer, leading to an overdose in the early hours of June 13.
According to the filing, the 57-year-old—currently serving a 31-year sentence for child sexual abuse crimes—was forced to take medication while in solitary confinement. His team claims Kelly was placed in isolation on June 10, just days after they filed an emergency motion citing a “murder plot” allegedly hatched by three Bureau of Prisons officials who, the defense argues, wanted to orchestrate his death via another inmate.
The new filing details a harrowing sequence: Kelly reportedly woke up disoriented, seeing black spots, and collapsed in his cell. After crawling to the door, he lost consciousness. Prison medical staff were unable to treat him on-site, prompting his transfer to Duke University Hospital by ambulance, where he remained for two days.
The document also claims that Kelly was slated for urgent surgery to address a blood clot issue but was abruptly removed from the hospital “against medical advice” and returned to solitary confinement by armed officers. The hospital had recommended at least a two-week stay for the procedure.
“His life is in jeopardy right now because the Bureau of Prisons denied him necessary surgery to clear clots from his lungs,” the legal team stated. “He could die from this condition, and they are letting it happen.”
Federal prosecutors have since fired back, describing the claims as “fanciful” and “theatrical,” dismissing the motion for emergency release as lacking credible evidence.
Kelly’s lawyers say they were unable to speak with their client until June 16, after a previously scheduled call was mysteriously canceled.
