TWO CO-WIVES HOSPITALISED AFTER CONSUMING HERBAL MIXTURE TO AROUSE HUSBAND FOLLOWING MARRIAGE TO THIRD WIFE
Two women living in the Dakwa community of Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have been hospitalised after reportedly consuming a local herbal aphrodisiac, commonly known as kayan mata, in a bid to reignite their husband’s attention following his recent marriage to a third wife.
The incident occurred just three days after their husband, Musa Muhammad, brought home his new bride from Gusau, Zamfara State. According to reports by Daily Trust, the co-wives, names withheld, fell critically ill after ingesting a powdered version of the herbal product, allegedly supplied by a local female herbalist.
Muhammad, who confirmed the incident, said the affected women were rushed to a clinic in Madalla, Niger State, after they began experiencing severe stomach pain. “They were rolling on the ground in pain. A nurse tried stabilising them with drips, but their condition didn’t improve,” he recounted.
Medical examination revealed that the herbs had caused internal organ damage, necessitating surgery. The women have since been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for over a week.
Muhammad revealed that the herbalist had previously supplied the women with liquid preparations of the aphrodisiac. However, the switch to a powdered formula, which they mixed with milk, proved fatal. A search is now underway to apprehend the herbalist, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Reacting to the incident, gynaecologist Dr. Taiye Anifowose warned against the use of unregulated herbal products. She emphasised that many such substances can cause lasting damage to internal organs and affect fertility. She also called for stronger public sensitisation from health agencies and community leaders to curb the rising use of unsafe aphrodisiacs.
“This is a wake-up call for proper education on the health risks associated with these so-called love potions,” she stated.
