WHY I RESIGNED – HAKEEM BABA-AHMED OPENS UP ON EXIT FROM PRESIDENCY

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the President in the Office of the Vice President, has opened up on why he stepped down from his role in the Presidency.

In an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, Baba-Ahmed said his resignation stemmed from frustration over lack of engagement in his role, stating that he couldn’t justify earning a salary without being productive.

“It was a huge responsibility to be appointed Special Adviser, but in reality, the role wasn’t actualized. It was very frustrating,” he said.

He pointed to the structural limitations within the Nigerian presidency, noting that the influence and activity of the Vice President’s office often hinges on personal dynamics with the President, political configurations, and the inner circles around the presidency.

“If the President doesn’t see the Vice President’s office as central to governance, there’s little that can be done. Unfortunately, this is what I encountered,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized his discomfort with idleness, saying, “There was a lot I could have contributed, but I wasn’t engaged. I’m not one to sit around doing nothing and still collect a paycheck.”

His departure underscores ongoing concerns about the functionality and relevance of advisory roles within the current administration.
