“I THOUGHT OF ENDING IT ALL” – ACTOR CHINEDU IKEDIEZE OPENS UP ON BATTLING SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

Chinedu Ikedieze, fondly known as Aki, has shared a deeply personal story about his childhood struggles after being diagnosed with stunted growth. In a recent interview, the Nollywood icon revealed how the condition led him to experience suicidal thoughts due to relentless mockery and self-doubt.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

Ikedieze recounted how, at just nine years old, a hospital visit changed his life forever. Doctors informed his mother that he had “stunted growth” or “growth retardation,” advising her to focus on his education rather than seek medical intervention.

“I remember my mom taking me to the hospital when I was around nine years old. The doctor told her, ‘Madam, stop worrying. Just make sure he reads his books, goes to school, and be there for him,’” he recalled. Seeing the term “growth retardation” on his medical report was a moment that stuck with him, as he continued to hear those words repeatedly.

Overcoming Pain and Mockery

Growing up with the condition was no easy feat. Ikedieze shared how he endured years of ridicule, with people calling him names and making him feel less than others.

“People taunted me. I cried several times. They called me names. It got so bad that, at times, I thought of ending it all,” he admitted.

But his mother’s unwavering support became his anchor. She encouraged him to embrace education as his greatest weapon, reminding him that physical labor was not his path. With renewed determination, he excelled in school, setting his sights on a future beyond his physical limitations.
