NCC ORDERS BAN OF PORNOGRAPHIC SITES IN NIGERIA
The Nigerian House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all pornographic websites across the country. The directive compels internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict access to explicit content immediately, with penalties for non-compliance.
The motion, sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State, highlights growing concerns over cyber pornography. Tafoki stressed that Nigeria, as a “highly religious country,” has not taken sufficient measures to curb access to obscene content. He cited examples of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern nations that have enacted strict anti-pornography laws.
Referencing studies from psychologists and sociologists, Tafoki warned that pornography consumption could contribute to adultery, prostitution, and addiction, posing risks to mental and social well-being.
Following a voice vote led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the motion, reinforcing the need for immediate action. The NCC has now been tasked with ensuring compliance, holding ISPs accountable for any failure to enforce the ban.
