NIGERIAN MEN ARE INSECURE ABOUT SELF-MADE WOMEN – BUKKY WRIGHT
Popular Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has shared her thoughts on why many Nigerian men struggle to handle self-made women.
Speaking on Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Channels Television on Sunday, March 2, 2025, the movie star explained that men who consider themselves suitable partners often hesitate to approach independent women.
“To be sincere, you imagine the right man coming your way, but most times, it’s a no-go because the ones who believe they’re right for you don’t even approach you,” she said. “I’ve heard men say, ‘Where do I start from?’ and I just think—start from anywhere! You’re a man, I’m a woman. It’s that simple.”
She further noted that the men who do approach actresses are often either seeking clout or have questionable intentions. “You can’t blame the women in the industry when these are the kind of men coming to them,” she added.
Wright went on to highlight the challenges self-made women face in relationships. “Even when the right men come along, many of them struggle with being with a self-sufficient woman or a popular actress. Some men get jealous over things they shouldn’t, forgetting they met this woman in her career before pursuing her.”
She questioned the insecurity some men exhibit, asking, “Is it the fame or what? Because I see this happen a lot, and I’ve experienced it myself. Nigerian men are not ready for a self-made woman. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but if you truly want an independent woman, there are certain things you have to accept.”
She concluded by saying, “If you want a woman who will fully submit to you, maybe you should go to your village and marry someone without ambitions. But if she has dreams and you try to suppress her, she will push back.”
The Omotara Johnson star also revealed that her temporary absence from the movie scene was due to the demands of motherhood and parenting.
