In a dramatic turn of events, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana has announced plans to pursue legal action against former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, following explosive revelations in Babangida’s recently published autobiography.

The book, unveiled to the public last week, delves into key moments of Babangida’s military rule, including the contentious annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, a watershed moment in Nigeria’s political history. In a startling admission, Babangida confirmed that the election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest, was indeed won by the late Moshood Abiola. This revelation has reignited long-simmering public anger over the annulment and its aftermath.

Femi Falana, a prominent figure in the struggle for democracy during the military era, was imprisoned under Babangida’s regime for protesting the annulment. Reacting to the former leader’s confessions, Falana accused Babangida of “malicious prosecution” and vowed to hold him accountable.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the senior advocate revealed that he has assembled a legal team to scrutinize Babangida’s actions during his time in power.

“I’ve assembled a team of lawyers, they’re looking into it,” Falana stated. “He [Babangida] has now admitted there was no basis for my prosecution because he now says Abiola won the election, which was the basis for our protest. It was malicious.”

Falana also condemned the violations of his fundamental rights during Babangida’s rule, emphasizing the personal toll of his imprisonment.

“Keeping me in Kuje prison denied me my right to liberty, my freedom of movement, and my right to choose my government. The man who did this has just come out to say, ‘I did it wrongly,’” he said.

The legal threat from Falana could open a new chapter in Nigeria’s reckoning with its turbulent political past. Babangida’s autobiography, intended as a reflection on his legacy, may now become the centerpiece of fresh legal battles, as victims of his regime seek justice for alleged human rights abuses and political injustices.
