Zenith Bank Marks World Environment Day With Lagos Street, Waterways Clean-Up
LAGOS — Zenith Bank Plc has commemorated the 2026 World Environment Day with a two-phase environmental clean-up exercise across Lagos, underscoring the increasing role of corporate organisations in advancing sustainability and climate action.
The initiative, held under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, began with a clean-up exercise along Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island, where employees of the bank participated in waste collection and environmental awareness activities aimed at promoting responsible disposal practices.
The second phase took place at the Falomo Waterways in Ikoyi in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA). The exercise focused on removing marine debris and supporting efforts to improve environmental conditions within the state’s waterways.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, said sustainability remains central to the bank’s operations, stressing that environmental protection requires collective responsibility.
She noted that the clean-up exercises reflected deliberate efforts by the bank to preserve communities, support climate action and encourage broader participation in environmental stewardship.
According to her, maintaining cleaner streets and waterways is a practical demonstration of how organisations can contribute meaningfully to building a more sustainable future.
The initiative forms part of Zenith Bank’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, which focuses on responsible business practices, energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and community impact.
The bank said its sustainability framework continues to align with global environmental standards and supports key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Sustainable Cities and Communities, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Climate Action.
With environmental concerns increasingly shaping public policy and business priorities, stakeholders continue to emphasise the importance of collaboration between government agencies, private-sector institutions and local communities in addressing urban waste challenges and strengthening climate resilience.
The Lagos clean-up initiative adds to a growing number of sustainability-focused interventions being undertaken across Nigeria’s financial services sector as organisations deepen their commitment to environmental responsibility.
