The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the organization”,“Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs”,“Islamic advisory council” Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed Muslim faithful across Nigeria to begin the search for the new crescent moon on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, as part of preparations for the commencement of Ramadan 1447 AH.

In a statement signed by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Sultan urged Muslims to observe the sky immediately after sunset on Tuesday and to report any credible sighting of the Ramadan crescent to traditional authorities or directly to the Sultanate Council.

The traditional Islamic practice of moon sighting determines the official start of the holy month of Ramadan, which is observed as a period of fasting, increased prayers, spiritual reflection, and charity. If the crescent is confirmed on Tuesday evening, Ramadan is expected to begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026; otherwise, it will start automatically on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

The Sultan’s directive highlights the importance of community participation and honesty in reporting sightings, as credible moon observations help establish when Ramadan should officially commence for Muslims in Nigeria.
