Man Dies, Wife Critically Injured After Granite-Laden Truck Crushes Car In Lagos

A tragic road accident in Lagos State on Thursday morning has left a man dead and his wife critically injured after a granite-laden articulated truck toppled onto their car at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck, heavily loaded with granite and travelling from the Epe axis, reportedly suffered a brake malfunction while approaching Eleko Junction. The loss of control caused the vehicle to veer off its lane and collide forcefully with a Toyota saloon car heading from Ajah towards Epe.
The impact was so severe that the truck toppled onto the smaller vehicle, crushing it beneath its weight and trapping the driver inside the wreckage. Emergency responders from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), with assistance from bystanders, worked to extricate the couple from the mangled car.
Sadly, the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife, seated in the front passenger seat, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention.
The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, evading arrest, according to officials. Police operatives from the Akodo Division secured the area during the rescue and recovery operation.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident as a deeply distressing and “preventable” tragedy, extending condolences to the bereaved family and urging all motorists to prioritise vehicle maintenance and road safety, especially for heavy-duty trucks navigating busy expressways.
The crash has reignited concerns about road safety compliance, mechanical faults, and reckless driving on Nigeria’s high-traffic highways.
